Perhaps one of the most hard-working and most respected live sound companies in South Africa at the moment is a company hailing from Johannesburg’s West Rand, called Smack Entertainment. And without a doubt what is taking these guys from strength to strength is their trust in the Electro-Voice (EV) brand from Prosound, having just purchased their 3rd Full EV system. Smack’s Managing Director, Fourie Smit, was kind enough to answer a couple of questions about what makes EV his brand of choice.
When did Smack Entertainment begin?
Smack Entertainment started out as a studio in early 2003 in the West Rand. I wanted to expand to more than just the studio and seeing as though I love the live music scene, I started buying a small rig to get into it. But soon the live side of thing was keeping me pretty busy and the studio wasn’t doing me any good. So I decided to focus fully on live sound production. The company took off and I’ve been loving it ever since.
How did you first go about getting into the EV brand?
The first time I heard an EV rig (the MT series) I was blown away by the sheer clarity and power. I love my rock music and that was the first system I had heard to justify the power needed to do it properly.
What is it about EV that is different to other systems you’ve tried?
When I started the company in 2003 I knew I needed a system that could justify what I need and what would make my clients stand back and just be amazed. I knew that EV is the way to go. I tried other systems but none of them could deliver the power or clarity I needed to do what I love.
You’ve just bought your 3rd EV system – Tour-X to be exact. Loving it?
The new EV Tour-X system delivers clear non-distorted powerful sound at a very affordable price. They are also very reliable and very hard working. I've never had any problems with any of the Tour-X units I've bought and they really do work hard.
You’ve done shows on the EV systems for just about everyone. Tell us more.
Some of the artists that have used and loved the EV Tour-X system hired through me are: The Parlotones, Prime Circle, Watershed, Jack Parow, AKing, The Graham Watkins Project, Van Coke Kartel - the list can go on and on.
We heard 2 major players in particular have really responded well to the EV rig?
Fokofpolisiekar actually sent me an email saying how much they love the new system and CrashCarBurn have done two countrywide tours only wanting to use the EV rig even if the venue has their own setup. Since purchasing the EV Tour-X system, my clientele has really peaked. DJ gigs and band gigs - they are all really impressed by the amazing power and clarity.
